Summer Tour of the Davis Wetlands
PRESS RELEASE/CALENDAR EVENT For Immediate Release Contact person: Sarah Ross, Volunteer Coordinator (530) 757-4828 Event: City of Davis Wetlands Tour Event Date: Saturday July 7th, 9:00-11:00am Summer Tour of the Davis Wetlands Water, always a precious resource, is the life force of wetlands in summer. Cattails, tules and Willows growing in and around the edge of ponds provide rare greenery in a rapidly drying environment. Turtles and aquatic invertebrates feed in the rich broth of warming seasonal ponds; while egrets, herons and other wading birds are drawn to this concentrated food source. Members of the public are invited to experience summer in the wetlands with docents Dave Anderson and Joan Humphrey on a free guided tour of The City of Davis Wetlands, Saturday July 7th from 9:00-11:00am. Tour participants should look for birds such as the Black-crowned Night-heron, which is the most wide-spread heron species in the world. Because of its diet and wide distribution, this species is regarded as an important bio-indicator of ecosystem health. Usually nocturnal, in summer the adult birds must hunt around the clock to feed voracious chicks which are ready to leave the nest by 6 weeks of age. Other species that may be seen in the City of Davis Wetlands include egrets, American Avocets, Black-necked Stilts, Western Meadowlarks, swallow species and the occasional river otter. All those wishing to join this free tour should meet a few minutes before 9:00 am at the gate in front of the City's wastewater treatment plant, east of the Yolo County landfill on Road 28H. No reservations are required. Directions to the tour are available on the Yolo Basin Foundation website at www.yolobasin.org. Tour participants coming from Sacramento should take the I-80 West. Turn right at the first exit, 32A, at the west end of the Yolo Causeway. Turn left at the end of the off ramp onto Road 105. Follow 105 across the railway line until rea
