Guided Tour of Lynch Canyon
A free guided tour of Solano County's Lynch Canyon Open Space will be held Saturday, July 28, from 9 am to 1 pm. Retired Fairfield High School teacher and popular hiking guide Dave Warner will guide visitors through woodlands of native oak, willow, buckeye and bay trees, and rolling hills of grasslands. Enjoy wildlife from soaring eagles and hawks to coyote, fox and ground squirrels. Explore ancient Indian acorn grinding rocks and see spectacular ridge top views. It's a chance to learn about local wildlife, grazing, geology, and history of a natural and recreational gem that's close to urban areas, but a short walk into Nature. The hike begins in the Lynch Canyon parking lot at 9 am Saturday. The only restroom on site is in the lot, and there is no potable water, so bring your own. Binoculars, good hiking shoes, sunscreen/hat, and insect repellant are recommended. This is a moderately difficult hike on irregular surfaces and hills. Reservations are not required. For more information, call Teri Engbring at the Solano Land Trust at 707-432-0150, extension 200. Directions: From I-80, take the Hiddenbrooke/American Canyon Exit, between Fairfield and Vallejo. From the south side of I-80, go east on McGary Road 1.5 miles, and turn left to go under I-80. Proceed through gate at end of the cul de sac and follow dirt road to gravel parking lot. For more information about Lynch Canyon and other Solano Land Trust open spaces, see the website at www.solanolandtrust.org. Lynch Canyon has only been open to the public since May, and is operated by Solano County Parks Wednesday through Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to posted closing time, but closed Monday and Tuesday. Docent-led Scenic Hikes of the 1,039 acre property will continue on the fourth Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Hikes are free, but a daily parking fee of $5 is required.
