Almond Festival
The Capay Valley Almond Festival began in 1915, and today has evolved into the largest one day multi-town festival in Yolo County. Cache Creek Casino Resort is proud to announce they are joining several other sponsors of this year's festivities, including the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians, CalCima, and James Wirth. The festival is scheduled for Feb. 24, rain or shine, in the towns of Esparto (7 a.m. – 4 p.m.), Capay (12-3 p.m.), Brooks (12-5 p.m.), Guinda (12-3 p.m.) and Rumsey (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) Because the Almond Blossoms are such a beautiful sight to see, the main day of the festival is held on the last Sunday in February, when the blossoms are open and most beautiful. Activities begin on Feb. 17 with a Queen's Dinner Pageant at the Guinda Grange. Known as one of the most celebrated dinner raffles in the Valley, the evening is hosted by the Western Yolo Grange and the Rumsey Improvement Association. This year's pageant is sponsored by the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians, and the winner will receive a scholarship and prizes. Serving as one of the judges this year is Tribal Chairman Marshal McKay. On Feb. 24th the Almond Festival will feature entertainment, craft and food booths, and special free activities geared specifically to children -- all spread throughout the five participating towns. It's a wonderful time to see the beauty of the entire Capay Valley and meet the people who live and work in the area. Providing entertainment during the festival is the group Calaveras. This award winning New Folk trio combines folk, jazz, blues, and country into original songs that are both fresh and timeless. Their songs have captured the prestigious Kerrville New Folk prize, grand prize in the West Coast Songwriters International song contest, the Napa Valley Emerging Songwriter award, West Coast songwriter's Association Song of the Year honors, and have appeared in TV shows and movies.
