Residents choose the path to future growth of our City through the election of leaders who, in a public process, wrote the City’s General Plan. That plan is updated on a regular basis by the City Council, and the next update is about to begin.
The General Plan spells out the direction development will take, but in broad strokes. It is up to us to fill in the many blanks. The General Plan does not address the pace of growth. Controlling growth’s pace is central to most residents’ quality of life. I believe a slower and more managed pace is called for, where infrastructure stays ahead of development.
High-density housing should be concentrated in the Triangle and Riverfront areas, as called for in the General Plan. It should not be fast-tracked to areas already heavily impacted by traffic. Commercial cores must not be eliminated from new neighborhoods, in order to keep the “village” concept intact. Parks should be built on schedule, not just around election time.
A new bridge is urgently needed across the Sacramento River. The General Plan calls for that bridge to be a southern crossing, to alleviate Jefferson Blvd. traffic and provide emergency exit from the City. However, a sudden push to put a bridge at 15th Street crossing to Miller Park in Sacramento is under way by the City Council. This would put our two major exits from the City within a block of each other, and do nothing to cure traffic problems on Jefferson Blvd.
